International Antitrust Conference, March 11–13, 2026, in Berlin

In March, I had the opportunity to attend the 23rd International Cartel Conference (IKK) in Berlin - one of the leading global forums for competition policy and competition law.

Organized by the Bundeskartellamt under the leadership of President Andreas Mundt, the conference once again brought together senior representatives from competition authorities, the judiciary, government, academia, and private practice. A particular strength of the IKK lies in the integration of high-level industry perspectives, including Timotheus Höttges (CEO, Deutsche Telekom) and René Obermann (Chairman, Airbus SE), adding a distinctly practical dimension to the debate. The participation of Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, further underscored the broader European policy context.

Substantively, the discussions focused on the key transformation pressures shaping modern competition policy: the increasing entanglement of competition and geopolitics, the implications of AI and data-driven business models for market dynamics, and the evolving balance between regulatory intervention and competitive market structures. A central theme throughout was the gradual shift from a purely ex post enforcement paradigm toward more anticipatory and structural forms of market oversight.

What distinguishes the IKK is precisely this combination of legal analysis, economic depth, and decision-making perspective. It remains a rare opportunity to engage directly with those shaping the framework conditions of competition policy and to gain first-hand insight into the strategic direction of the field.
